Iceland Day 2 - The World Cup

Good morning from Iceland!  I slept like a ROCK!!! Hooray!  I set my alarm for 6:00 a.m. so I could hopefully start getting into a sleep rhythm.  I was the first one awake, so I quietly headed to the kitchen to see about getting some coffee started.

This just makes me happy.

This is the coffee situation.  Electric kettle to heat water and then a French press to steep the coffee.  I wasn't sure, but managed just fine and my first cup was done in no time.  The rest of the crew was up within an hour and we started getting excited for the World Cup soccer game.  The first World Cup appearance by Iceland ever.  We all got into our gear and headed out into the rainy day to join the festivities.

We made a quick pit stop to see the inside of this church.

It was dramatically plain and stunning.  This is where Esra's graduation was held.

The organ was HUGE!

Then we headed downtown to The Lebowski Bar to snag a great seat for the game.  Maybe we were there 15 minutes before the doors opened and a solid three hours before the game.  Don't judge!

We took over this corner booth.  We were joined by a patriotic crew from France who were cheering hard for their team in the first game of the day.

We were just holding out for the real game of the day....ICELAND!!!

The many faces of Esra during the game. So nerve wrecking!

I know nothing about soccer - but I was a nervous mess!  Argentina was so good!  They were on the offense the entire game!  Could not keep them on their side of the field.  And if they said Messi's name one time, they said it a thousand.  Argentina scored first, just a few minutes into the game.  Boo!!!!

But then Iceland scored a few minutes later and this place erupted!!  Screams, cheers, beers were overturned, hugs were given and smiles all around.  The bar handed out coupons for free beer when Iceland scored so all had refills.  Yes!

It was a tense ending with Iceland hanging on to a 1-1 tie, but it felt like a huge victory to a team that was supposed to lose!  What a thrill to be in the company of these fans who were so excited!  I saw one guy walking down the street with his girl saying "This may be the best day of my life!"

Tomorrow we head to the summer house for the night!  Lots of nature coming up!
